River Run & the Salmon of Knowledge
This sculptural piece draws inspiration from the Irish legend of the Salmon of Knowledge.
The story tells of Finegas, a wise poet who spent years trying to catch the magical salmon said to grant wisdom to whoever tasted it. When he finally did, his young apprentice Fionn accidentally gained its power after burning his thumb while cooking it. This artwork imagines a moment shortly before the salmon is captured where the salmon is nearly “tasted” by another, —suggesting, perhaps, that some other being may have taken a bite before Fionn ever did.
The otter or dobhar-chú (dowar coo) is based on the legend of a giant otter said to travel the waterways of ireland with a penchant for human flesh. But a salmon will do for a snack.
