There is a story captured within each piece
Within that story are many chapters
For each piece the chapter headings are similar but the content is different
every time
Chapter:
Initial inspiration
This could be from a single source or multiple. An idea coming from something totally unrelated to the final subject matter. If it is a commisioned work then a series of meetings will be had with the customer and/or the customers architects or engineers.
Concept development
The concept development could entail a new material or technique and so some trials may be done to understand the feel of the material and the finish. The aim may be to protray a certain emotion or idea throug the relative interation with other materials in the project or in the envirionment where it is set.
Mock-up creation
The mockups may take many forms depending on what they are for. It may be that I want to play with interwoven forms and need to check the final shape and so a clay maquett may suffice. Or if there is a need to have a clearer idea of how the piece will interact with its environment then an engineered CAD (computer aided design) of the work will be created. This could be placed into a further computer generation simulation of the final intallation area. This simulation can also be use to alter the position and intesity of lighting, both natural and artifical.
Materials aquisition
Every effort is made to aquire all of the materials needed to make the final work.
Final detailed design review before build
During this time there may be changes made due to a number of factors such as materials availabiliy, costs, change request from customer etc. These changes can, if needed, be reworked into the mock-up to check that original intentions are maintained.
Build/Sculpt
Creation of the work proper begins. If needed also special parts may be outsourced and fabricated under supervision by me. There may be prearranged stages of production that is reviewed by the customer if it is a commision. Otherwise if it is a self commisioned piece I may review and change as the work develops for various reasons
Installation
Some of the larger pieces may need specialist intallation works done. Depending on the size or location this could be done by me or a subcontratior. Sometimes this could be with the assistance of the customers civil engineers or architect+
Final Review and Handover
When everything is finalised with the customer to ensure that they are 100% happy with the final resulting works.
